Profile
Professor Stephen Durham is Head of Section, Allergy and Clinical Immunology at National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College and Honorary Consultant Physician in Allergy and Respiratory Medicine at Royal Brompton Hospital London. He has studied basic mechanisms of allergic rhinitis and asthma and has a particular focus on translational studies of allergen immunotherapy. that have elucidated mechanisms of human antigen-specific tolerance and informed novel treatment approaches. For example he has defined the role of regulatory T cells and ‘protective’ IgG-associated antibodies in allergen immunotherapy for hayfever. He holds grants from the MRC, Asthma UK and from 2010-2015 from the Immune Tolerance Network NIH, USA to explore novel mechanisms and develop predictive biomarkers of clinical response in a head-to-head trial of subcutaneous v sublingual immunotherapy. Professor Durham has been Principle Investigator in several recent ground-breaking trials that have resulted in the Europe-wide registration of allergen immunotherapy vaccines as disease-modifying treatments that confer longterm benefit. He is immediate Past President of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology and a member of the NIH Immune Tolerance Network Steering Committee in USA and External Advisor to the NIH Inner City Asthma Consortium.
