Profile
  • John Warner is Professor of Paediatrics and Head of Department in Imperial College. His clinical work is based at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. His research has focused on the early life origins of asthma and related allergic and respiratory disorders. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers on this topic and additionally over 200 invited papers, chapters and editorials. He has successfully supervised 14 PhD students and 8 for MDs. His major research contribution has been to demonstrate differences in fetal immune ontogeny in relation to later development of allergic diseases including asthma. He is now running a series of intervention studies to attempt to prevent the development of allergic sensitisation and to interrupt the evolution of the allergic march. Additional studies have focused on the mechanisms of airway inflammation in infant wheezers. The following papers and chapters summarise much of his work:
  • Warner JO. The origins of asthma. In: Childhood Asthma. Eds: Szefler S, Pedersen S. Taylor Francis New York 2006 pp 43-69
  • Warner JO. Development origins of asthma and related allergic disorders. In: Development Origins of Health & Disease. Eds: P Gluckman and M Hanson. Cambridge University Press 2006 pp 349-369
  • Recent publications include: Erlewyn-Lajeunesse M et al. Broncho-alveolar lavage MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in pre-school wheezers and their relationship to persistent wheeze. Paediatr Research 2008; 64: 194-199
  • Gruber C et al. Early atopic disease and early childhood immunisation – is there a link? Allergy 2008; 63: 14646 -1472
  • Holloway JA et al. Phenotypic analysis of circulating dendritic cells during the second half of human gestation. Pediatr Allergy Immunol 2009; 20: 119-125
