Profile
Professor Chung is Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Head of Experimental Studies Unit at National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London. He is Honorary Consultant Physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, and member of the Asthma-COPD Consortium of its Biomedical Research Unit. He is a principal investigator in the MRC/Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma. His research is funded by MRC, Wellcome Trust and Asthma UK. He is also co-leader of IMI EU/EFPIA UBIOPRED project on Systems Biology of severe asthma and member of the NIH-funded Severe Asthma Research Program (SARP1).
The approach is bench-to-bedside and vice-versa and much effort is concentrated on cells of well-characterised patients. His research interests include mechanisms of airway inflammation and repair, airway smooth muscle biology and corticosteroid insensitivity in asthma and COPD. One overarching theme is the role and effect of oxidative stress in various pathophysiological processes in airways disease and its transduction pathways through the innate immune response. Two major poles are the interactions of the kinome underlying inflammation and corticosteroid sensitivity, and the effect of environmental particles in the lung.
