Profile
Seif Shaheen recently completed an Asthma UK Senior Research Fellowship and is principal investigator in a collaborative programme of research focused on asthma aetiology. The broad aim of this research is, through observational epidemiology and randomised controlled trials, to identify causes of asthma which are amenable to intervention, in order to devise strategies for primary and secondary prevention.
His recent research has focused on how the prenatal environment might influence the development of asthma and atopy. He is particularly interested in how environmental influences such as diet, throughout the lifecourse, interact with genes to influence the aetiology of asthma, and in the role of epigenetics. In 2000 he proposed that frequent paracetamol use may be a risk factor for asthma, a link which has since been confirmed in a number of epidemiological studies.
