Seif Shaheen on asthma

The last half-century has seen an epidemic of asthma in the UK. Despite years of study, science is still unable to fully explain its rise. Seif Shaheen is Clinical Professor of Respiratory Epidemiology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and thinks that epidemiology may hold the key.

Epidemiology looks at the distribution of a disease across a population, and tries to explain that distribution. Professor Shaheen calls this process "detective work", and his career has taken him from Guinea-Bissau to Greenwich in the hunt for clues. He hopes that by seeking out trends and identifying the root causes, there may be a chance to prevent such diseases in the first place.
